TE RURU YACHT CLUB

ELECTION OP OFFICERS. ' The annual general .meeting of the Te : Ruru Yacht Club was held in Scott's tearooms on Thursday, about forty-five members being present. The Commodore (Mr. W. W. Waddilove) was in the chair. In the course of a report of the season's work the commodore said that seventeen races were held/ which attracted 113 starters. Seventeen trophies were donated to the club, and eighteen trophies were found out of the club's funds, and two challenge trophies were competed for, making a total of thirty-seven prizes. These prizes were distributed over sixteen, boats. Not a single protest was lodged in connection with the races during the whole of the season's racing. Dealing with the criticism that had been directed against the club for carrying on its usual racing programme, the commodore contrasted the sport of yachting with other sports — claiming that a sport in which there was no "gate," no dividends, no barrackers, and no grandstand, that bad no professionals, that asked no favours, and whose prizes were either voluntarily donated or found out of the club's funds, could at least claim that by continuing their sport they were doing better work for the Empire than to waste their time in idleness, merely to contemplate the awful consequences of war. The number of yachtsmen that had enlisted throughout New Zealand was the final crushing answer to these critics. The accounts, which showed, a credit balance of £14, were adopted. The following officers - were elected for the forthcoming season: — Commodore, Mr. W. W. Waddilove ; vice-commodore, Mr. H. Hardham ; rear-commodore, Mr. F. Keirnan-; secretary, Mr. J. Helgeson; racing secretary, Mr. J. Langfora ; i treasurer, Mr. H. Turner ; auditor, Mr. H. S. Fanner ; handicapper, Mr. W. Highet ; delegates to Yacht and Motor Boat Association, Messrs. W. W- Waddilove and H. Hardham. Committees for the year were also elected. A number of amendments to the rules were adopted, and the sum of £5 was appropriated towards the building fund.
