Nominations for all handicap events at the Horowhenua Racing Club's Meeting close to-night at 8 o'clock with Mr. R. D. Wallace, secretary, Levin." , Ejcpecti is top-weight in the Spring Handicap at Wanganui, and second topweight in the Flying Handicap. The I Marton winner Miacara is nicely placed in thie Flying with 7.8, and Banksia, who is on the 8.3 mark, reads well in the Spring Handicap. In the Winter Cup she conceded Fortify 111b and a beating. In the Heathcote Handicap there was a stone between them, both finishing unplaced. Now they are on the same mark. Neither Wishful nor Recorder, owned by Mr. G. L. Stead, is engaged in the Wanganui Guineas. Mr. W. G. Stead has Sweet Corn, Gold Painting, and Eligible in the race. It is stated the latter may go through to Avondale for the Flying Ha-ndicap. . ■- Mummer wag railed through to Auckland from Hastings yesterday. He wiD be ridden in the Avondale Cup by C. Stowei who rode him when he put up his best race last season in the Autumn Handicap at Trentham. S. Ja*mieson's Opaki team consists of Montana, Botanist, Ruatangata, two-year-old by San Fran — Sunbonnot, and three-year-old filly and four-year-old gelding by Advance — Splendid Idea. Braemore, a place-getter in the Trial Stakes at Dannevirke, is a four-year-old full sister to Braeburn, and was making her first appearance in" a race. She is by Sir Laddo— Tuhirangi (by Son- wester — Caller Herrin), and is related to Fond Memory, Victons, and other* winners bred by the late Mr. John Cotter. Braemore is trained at Awapuni by J. Farmer for Mar. Keith White, of Hawkes Bay. There are eight days between the opening days of the Avondale and Wanganui Meetings. Loyal Arch is the only performer engaged at both places. She will probably be raced in the Flying at Avondale to give her trainer a line as to her Wanganui Guineas prospects. Glenmore started at a very short price in the Dannevirke Steeplechase, but he jumped splendidly, and never looked like getting beaten. He is engaged in the Steeplechase on the second day of the Avondale Meeting, and will probably be taken up. Appin, who looked well and pulled up sound, is also engaged at Avondale. On ' Dannevirke form it would take a lot of weight to bring him and Glenmore together. Redsbire (Downshire-r-Red Peony), winner of the Hack Handicap at Ashburton, went through as a two-year-old unbeaten. He dead-heated in the Trial Plate at North Otaao and won the Shorts at the same meeting, on his only appearance as a two-year-old. Redshire is engaged in the New Zealand Cup with tho minimum weight. After the easy manner in which she scored at the Dannevirke Racing Club's meeting, Ni£a looked something like a moral for To Matau Hack Steeplechase, at the Dannevirke Hunt Club's Meeting. She wa3 beaten by Merry Lad, and lost second money, and dividend through hei rider being unabie to draw the weight. V. Coiello, who bad Discussion and Sportsman at tbe Dannevirke, Meeting, informed me that' Fair Rosamond was going along all right, and < would take her place in the New Zealand Cop field. Secretaries A. Hathaway (MastertoaJ, A. W. Trass (Ashhurst), and E. J. Gothard {Woodville) were among the official visitors at the Dannevirke Meeting. Finisterre (Finland— Lady Darling), a well-grown three-year-old, ran two good races at the Dannevirke Meeting on Wednesday. He should get on the win- ■ ning list before the season has much further advanced. Fender, a New Zealand Cap candidate, was among the unplaced division in the Spring Handicap at AshburtOH. Recorder, who is engaged in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui, improved on her Amberley form by finishing second to Medley (Varco — Shindy), in the good time of-lmin.l4sec. With a pound more to carry, Recorder must be given a place among the probables at Wanganui. The first two-year-old race of the season, the Avondale Stakes, is set down for decision on. the 15th. It will probably bring out a good field, including some " foreign " competitors. T. Higgins, the Opaki trainer, is going up with Mr. Dorset's Genera) Latour — Romolafilly, purchased at the last Glenlora Park sale. A. E. Neale, the Napier trainer, is also going up with Lady Elysian. (Elysian — Lady Flora), bred at the Ascot Stud, Auckland. Other likely starters 'are Joanna (Achilles — Shepherdess), the jhalf -sister to Boris,- Ritasea (Achilles — Aideen). Lady Jack (Carl Rosa — Miss Jack), who showed to advantage in the two-year-old parade at the Pakuranga Hunt Club's Meeting at Ellerelie, will also be in the field. H. Young, the Fordell light-weight, will have the mount on Sunbirdl in the New Zealand Cup. She, RinaJdo, and Banksia are engaged in the Spring Handicap at Wanganui, which carries a 51b penalty in the Riccarton race. Montana, the best of the Elevations, looked above himself the first day at Dannevirke, and both he and his stablaroate (Botanist) who also competed in the Umutaoroa, Hack Handicap, were two of th» least fancied.- The gallop sharpened Montana up. a* next day he carried' 9.0 and «66red in the Makotuku Hack HanHandicap, beating, among others, Thoughtful (in receipt of just on 2.0), who was only beaten half a head in the Hack Welter on th* previous day. _Mr. A. M'Donald was not present to see Montana, win, being on a business visit to Wellington. F. Lind, th« Napier trainer came through to Dannevirke with Hikaha-keke (Zimmerman — Hinewhata), who failed to run up to expectation*. He also has. in work a horse by Cour de Lion — Hinetaura. Ardenvhor (the high-priced full-bro-ther to Sunbird) competed unsuccessfully in a hack r*c« aA Ashbiirtoa. *ad cia jtt witiUn sat qtrtta $•» 2fe&ad Qujk A

Undecided pulled up lame after working at Trentham on Tuesday morning, and is an- unlikely starter at Otaki. So far this season three-year-olds have done well. At Marton Hydras and Hygia won, and Hylatua should have won. At Dannevirke, Spain, Carillon, and Trials won, and Finisterre and Two- | lights were placed. .At Ashburton, Snub, Redshire, and Wishful won, and Recorder ran second. Several three-year-olds are engaged at Avondale, including Loyal Arch and Eligible, who were successful at two years!' Rexer (Field Battery— Eongotea) did not score out of his turn at the Dannevirke Hun^ Club's Meeting. He filled third place -at Marton, and on the previous day at Dannevirke. Claude Ellingham, whose name was mentioned yesterday among the Wellington contingent reported missing at the Dardanelles, was a son of Mr. Alf Ellingham, the well-known Hastings sportsman. Imported horses keep on bobbing up as winners in different parts of the Commonwealth. Irish Duck (Earla Mor — Duckshot) and Glad Eye (Littleton — Dark Eye) were successful at Boulder last month: Loudovitch (Louviers — Witch of the Air) won a Maiden Plate at Moonee Valley, and Beu, trained by the ex-New Zealander Lou Robertson, for Messrs. Aand G. Tye, won the August Handicap, one mile and a-half, at Flemington, in 2min 36£ sec. Marculfus, a fancied candidate for the Melbourne Cup, carried 9.0, and was only beaten by a length. Beau is an English-bred horse, and as a •two-year-old' won a selling race in England over a mile and three furlongs, and beat a fair field. He is, a nicely-bred horse, by Benevenuto (son of St. Simon) from Karess, by Kentford (son of Skylark) from Enchantress, by Baliol (son of Blair Athol) from Belle of the Ball, by Belladrum (sire of Barcaldine's dam) from Mousselline de Lame, by Tim Whiffler from Elaine, by Ethelbert. Benvenuto is a brother in blood to William the Third, both being by St. Simon, and their dams were full sisters. Beu is engaged in the Caaffield Cup with 7.4, and Melbourne Cup with 7.3. R. Young, who has been out of the saddle since he rode at the Marton Meeting at New Year time, made his reappearance at t ! j same course last week. Th» four-yeur-old progeny of imported Linacre, who I as one representative in the Dominion, have started to do well in Australia. At Rosehill last month Lingard (Linacre — Blue Black) won the Granville Stake:., one mile. The same afternoon at Brisbane Loveacre (Linacre — Lovelorn) ran second in the Moonnee Memorial Handicap, nine furlongs, later won the Club Handicap, one mile, later in the afternoon. Negative, who scored in the Hack Hurdles at Dannevirke, formerly carried the late Mr. Hodge's colours. By Birkenhead — Film, he is a full brother to Kairorria, who won hurdle races in the Dominion and New South Wales. Besides Braemar, J. Farmer has in work at Awapuni Glorify, by Golden Gate— Glory. Mr. K. White is sending him over from Hawkes Bay a colt by Maori King — Waiau. i The Adelaide Grand National Hurdle Race winner, Wondergraph, has a rather good pedigree. He was bred in New South Wales by Mr. W. S. Suttor, and is by Young Grafton (son of Grafton) from Valencia, by The Australian Peer (son of Darebin) from La Valette, by Maribyrnong (son of Fisherman) from Queensberry, by Hawthornden from Algeria (imp.), by Blinkhoolie (son of Rataplan) from Adxastia, by St. Albans (son of Stockwell). He is a half-brother to Alcoy, Mother Doris, and Sydney I Harbour. A few years ago Sydney Harbour was a smart horse in South Australia, where he won Borne good races, but he died early. ASHBURTON RACES > (IT TQWHUM.— PRSSB iSSOCUMOMj ASHBURTON, 10th September. The Ashburton County Racing Club's' Spring Meeting was successfully concluded to-day, in fine weather. There was a large attendance, and some good racing was witnessed, though the fields were smaller than usual. The totalizator investments for the day were £12,216 (for eight races), as against £8768 (for seven races) on tbe corresponding day last year, while for the meeting the amount put through the machine aggregated £26,656 10s, as compared with £17,818 at the 1914 Spring Meeting., The net profits are to be devoted to the Patriotic Fund.
