YON HINDENBURG'S SURPRISE
LEADS TO GREAT EVENTS , 'i RUSSIANS RETIRE ON PISSA-VISTULA FRONT (By Telegraph.— Press .Association.— Copyright.) (Received July 19, 10 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, 18th July. 'An Austrian official message states : An Austrian corps, fighting in closest touch with the Germans, between the Vistula and the Bug, stormed and captured after seven attempts an important Russian vantage point west of Grabovitz, and penetrated to one of the enemy's main positions. The Germans pierced th« enemy's lines south-west of Krasnosielc. A Berlin official message states : Field-Marshal yon Hindenburg's offensive has led to great events. General yon Bulow's army is progressing in the KurscEany district, across the Windawa. The cavalry repeatedly defeated the Rnssians, capturing eleven officers, including the commander of the 18th Rifle Brigade, 2450 men, three guns, and five machine guns. General yon Gallowit'z attacked 'the Russian position south-east of Mlava. Three lines were successively stormed and carried north-west and north-east of Prasnyszj and the Djiielitt Lipa was reached. The pressure on both sides shook the Russians, who evacuated Prasnysz and retreated to the previously consolidated Ciechanow-Krasnosielc line. The pursuing German troops stormed and pierced this position southward of Zielona on a front of four and a-quarter miles, forcing the enemy to retreat. The attackers were assisted by General yon Scholz's troops, who advanced to the pursuit from Kelme. The Russians retreated on their entire front between the Pissa and yisfcula towards Narew. I RUSSIANS RETIRE ON THE NAREW. PETROGRAD, 18th July. Official. — 'The enemy occupied the right banks of the Windawa and Wenta, and continued at certain sectors to advance eastward. Our troops between the Pissa- and the Orzec were withdrawn to take up a more concentrated position on the right bank of the Narew. 1 • Tho High Commissioner reports :—: — . LONDON, 17th July, 6:10 p.m. That there is great 'activity in the eastern theatre is disclosed by the latest Petrograd communique. The enemy is pursuing the offensive in numerous directions, and has advanced at certain points. Elsewhere the attacks were 1 repulsed. The Russians retired on the right bank of the river Narew, (Press Association.) AUSTRIAN OFFICIAL REPORT. LONDON, 17th July. Austrian official. — 'We captured twelve officers, 1300 men, and three machine guns northward of ihe Dniester. REPORTED GERMAN CAPTURES. (Received July 19, 9 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, 18th July. An official Berlin message states that the Germans south-west of Kraflnosjtav captured 28 officers, 6380 men, and nine machine-guns.
