MORE STEAMERS
THE TIDE HAS TURNED MR. MASSEY'S ACTION. The Prime Minister on 18th June de> spatched a crfble to the Hon. T. Mackenzie, High Commissioner, in reference to the shortage of refrigerating steamers for New Zealand. On Saturday he received the following reply :—: — "With reference to your telegram of 18th June and my telegram of 19th June, I am pleased to report that after much negotiation, with the Board of Trade and Tonnage Committee, I have succeeded in having added to the list of steamers available for loading in New Zealand, the Indrapura during August, and the Whakarua and Niwaru during September, thus procuring additional space for three hundred thousand carcases for these two months, which I hoped to get, as indicated in my telegram of 17th June. The Tonnage Committee propose to allocate only insulated space of those steamers to New Zealand, and to fill up with general cargo in Australia. This makes available for loading in New Zealand nine steamers during July, eight during August, and eight during September." The Prime Minister states that it may fairly now be claimed that the tide has turned so far as the shipping shortage is concerned.
