THE RUSSIAN COUNTER
HEAVY FIGHTING ON THE DNIESTER (Beceived June 26, 9.30 a.m.) PETBOGBAD, 25th Jtme. Official. — The enemy attempted with extraordinary persistence to advance along the railway from Lemberg to Brzezany, but failed owing to onr vigorous counter-attacks. A desperate battle on the Zaravno-Domestrvitze front is developing in our favour. Great German forces which crossed to the left bank of the Dniester in the Kozary district suffered enormous losses, and were driven back to the river. They were forced to assume the defensive under difficult conditions. Some •were crowded on the islands, and others clung to the left bank. The Austrians crossed the Dniester near Martynovo and Bouzdianeff, but •were flnng back to the river, where 1700 have already been taken prisoner. The enemy is endeavouring to hold houses near the river, resisting desperately. Our artillery gave effective support, and we assaulted a stronglyfortified position, Mount Bezymianna. In the Nizniof region the Austrians did not dare fa.cc our impetuous bayonet attack, and fled in disorder to their second line. We followed, and- bayoneted the garrison except a remnant, which was taken prisoner. AGED EMPEROR SPEAKS. VIENNA, 25th June. ■ The Emperor Franz Josef, in a speech from his balcony at a great demonstration at Scheoenburg to celebrate the capture of Lemberg, said he was convinced his people would retain the same sentiments until, with God's will, a victorious and honourable peace would give his people guarantee for their welfare.
