THE FALL OF LEMBERG
ENEMY'S TERRIFIC LOSSES ESTIMATE OF HALF A MILLION LONDON, 25th June. The Morning Post J s Petrograd correspondent states that the Germans again employed their phalanx formation in the direction of Ravaruska. Their troops comprise picked regiments from the French front. They were temporarily dissolved after forcing the passage of the San, owing to the difficulty of supplying the enormous number in a restricted area over long lines of communication, but recovered their effectiveness because of the stubborn Russian resistance, which delayed the speed of their advance. Though their formation continues effective, they are rapidly losing speed and compactness, and becoming impracticable as the communications become more and more difficult. The German losses at the Grodek Lakes were appalling. Captured officers declare that they lost half of their effectives before the Russians retired to Lemberg. It is estimated that the Germans lost half a million men in a vain endeavour to force a decisive battle. * The Russians retain their perfect freedom of manoeuvring. FIGHTING CONTINUES. VIENNA, 25th June. Official. — Fighting with strong Russian rear-guards continues east and north-west of Lemberg. Our troops have occupied Ostrowiec.
