Dr. Morice, of Greymouth, arrived in Wellington from Christchurch thiß morning. Mr. A. Kaye, of Christchurch, was a2f passenger by the W&hine from Lyttelton to-day. Earl Kitchener, Secretary of State for War, yesterday celebrated his sixty-fifth birthday. Mr. Henry Buck, of Featherston. has been appointed an officer under the Fisheries Act. Mr W. H. George, who has been in Australia for some months, returned to Wellington yesterday. Tho Hon. Sir James Caroll, M.P. for Gisborne, was a passenger by the Victoria from the North this morning The appointment of Mr. A. F. Lowe as Clerk of the House of Representatives, vice Mr. H. Otterson, resigned, is gazetted. My. W. L. Hooson. of the firm of Simester, Hooson, and Co., of Wellington and Sydney, has been accepted for active service. 'Archbishop O'Shea, of Wellington, and the Rev. J. H. Chappell, of Timaru, were passengers for 'San Francisco by the Marama yesterday. Amongst , the passengers for Sydney by the Ulimaroa to-day were Mr. A. D. Riley, Mr. H. J. Archer, and the-mem-bers of "The Glad Eye" Company. Lance-Corporal W. J. P. Livesey, of the Military Police Force, has been transferred to the Staff as Staff Ser-geant-Major Instructor, No. 5 Area Group. Mr. C. H. Mitford, of the headquarters staff of tho Bank of New Zea« land, retires at the end of this mouth.* He proposes to take up his residence in Auckland. A private cable message was received in Wellington yesterday trom Major W. J. Hardham, V.C., at Alexandria, in which he says that his wounds are not of a serious nature and that he is progressing favourably, Mr. H. Holland, Mayor of Christchurch, who came up to Wellington last week to attend a meeting of the executive of the Municipal Association, and has since then been making a tour of the Wellington provincial district, left for the South .last night. Mr H. T. Ellingham, who represents Crown tenants on the Wellington Land Board, is still in a private hospital in the country, but is making a good recovery. The board decided yesterday, on the motion of Mr. James_ Georgetti, to send him a letter, expressing its sympa' thy, and the hope that he would soon be well enough to resume his seat. From New Plymouth comes news of the death of Mr. Arthur Standish. aged 77 years, a. very old settler, and the first Mayor of New Plymouth. Mr StAiidish, who was a lawyer, was a member of the old Provincial Council, and occupied many important public positions, including (for some years) that of Crown Prosecutor. He took a keen interest to racing, and at one time owned A number of horses. At yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Land Board, Mr James Georgetti congratulated Mr. Joseph Dawson upon his reappointment as a member of the board, and expressed the hope that his health would permit him to continue to hold the position for many years. The Commissioner (Mr. T. N. Brodrick) and Mr Charles M'lntyre also offered Mr. Dawson their congratulations. Mr. Dawson thanked the board for its kind appreciation of his services.
