COST OF CARRYING

PROBABLE ADVANCE IN PETONE. Since the war commenced horse-feed n has, in common with other commodities, advanced in price till it has reached a very high figure indeed. This abnormal rise has been keenly felt by carters and carrying firms, and though the public has not so far been asked to meet the increased cost, it has be*n anticipated in some quarters that something would eventually be done to lighten the heavy burden on the earner. The Petone carrying firms have now taken the matter up in real earnest, with the result that a meeting is shortly to be held to determine whether or not the price of carrying should be advanced. The consensus of opinion appears to be ' that a rise is inevitable. "Otherwise," said a member of a Petone carrying firm to a Post reporter, "we may as well shut up shop."
