HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT
The High Commissioner reports: — LONDON, 17th June, 11.55 a.m. German attacks during the last three days around the village of Liatzkow, near Windau ware unsuccessful. Fighting ,on Tuesday ended in the Russians' favour. In the region of Popeliany the Russians crossed the Venta. In pursuit of the retreating enemy, the Russian cavalry sabred 100 Germans and took some dozens of prisoneis. Fighting at Shavli continues with varied fortune, some villages falling into the enemy hands. At the Dubissa there were aitillery duels. Beyond the middle Niemen, the enemy on Tuesday sustained heavy losses, making fruitless attempts to take the offensive. . In the course of counter-attacks in the region east of Mariampol, the Russians captured villages occupied by the enemy. On Tuesday the enemy began a bombardment of Ossowiec at two in the morning, but batteries of tigs fortress got the upper hand. In the Orkitz Valley, during Tuesday night, the enemy opened an intense artillery fire from numerous batteries against tho village of Jednorojetz, throwing tens of_ thousands of shells in a short space of time. On Tuesday the enemy several times tried to attack the Russian position his efforts ending in his occupation t>f part only. He completely destroyed the trenches of one of our regiments. LOjSDON", 17th June, 11.55 a.m." North of Prasnysz the Russians by energetic counter-attack reoccupied all advanced trenches which the enemy had maintained since his attack on the 12th, _ In Galicia, the battle on the San continues with increasing fierceness. On the Dniester, fighting along the Tis-mienica-Bystritza ' front continued on Monday and Tuesday to the Russians' advantage. South of Widatcheif, near Bereznitza, and at Kroulevska the Russians captured another 500 German piisoners, including fourteen officers, also four guns and six inachine-guns. AUSTRIANS REPORT HUGE CAPTURES. LONDON, 17th June. Austrian official : [n, the last fifteen days we captured 106 Russian officers, 12^,300 men, 53 cannon, 187 machine guns, and fifty-eight wagons.
