July 28— PahiatUa Racing Club. July 20— Woodlands Hunt Club. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") During the present season the sum of £527,799 has been invested in the totalisator at the- four meetings held at EUerslie. The amount named^ which is a record for the Auckland Racing Club, is an increa-se of £32,328 over tho amount handled during the season 1913-14. "Both Liberator and El Gallo, the only two horses to win the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase, were short pedigree horses. Liberator was by Betrayer, a member of the great Traducet— • Idalia family, to which belonged Sil Modred (a great performer in New Zealand and Australia, and successful sira in America). July, Idalium, and Cheviot, who also went to America and made a name at the stud there. July (foaled in July) went to the stud in New South Wales, and Idalium followed his brothers to America. Diana (dam of Liberator) was a mare whose breeding could not be traced. An Auckland scribe has got mixed u,p in the pedigree of El Gallo, who was by Spalpeen from Lobelia-, by Albert (brother to Leopold). The balance of the pedigree given to the Aucklander, by Opawa — Arab Child, belongs to another Lobelia. The dam of El Gallo was a well-known performer in the Bay of I Plenty district,' where she was raced ! by Mr. G. W. Vercoe, who bred El Gallo. She won her first race (a Produce Stakes, for Wo-year-6lds) it ths Bay of Plenty Meeting. The Auckland sportsman, Mr. E. Burke, won four races At the same meeting with Anita and Annabelle. Two. seasons later sh» won the Tauranga Cup, Bay of Plenty Stakes, and Publicans' Purse. The following season she ran second to St. Ursula in the Tauranga- Cup, and won the other two events above named. A season later she was placed three times at the Ba-y of Plenty and twice at Ohinemuri. Vercoe's Lobelia was a brown mare. The other one, raced by Mr. W. Pettitt, of Onga Onga, was a chestnut by Opawa—Arab Child, and was four or five years older than the dam of El Gallo. The Hawkes Bay mare won her first race at Porangahau as a three-year-old. She also won at Ormondville, which, place in those days had a tote permit. The following season she won at both meetings of the Town and Suburban Club at Taradale, also at Walpawa, and a double at Onga Onga. After competing unsuccessfully at Hastings and Napier Park she won another race at Taradale. El Gallo's successes at Ellerslie at the Summer Meeting and tho double wins at Egmont and last week bring his winnings up to 2200 soys. Although the fields in. the principal events at tho Manawatu Trotting Meeting were disappointingly small, the totalisator turnover (£4911) averaged over £700 per race. This must be considered very satisfactory, as the Wairarapa Clvb — an old established club, which raced on a holiday and attracted Canterbury competitors with foreign capital — put'through Only about £100 more than Manawatu. The South Island-bred Maple Leaf (Canada — Sweet Nell) won a race at the Epsom Meeting this month. The Weaver, winner of the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap at the Manawatu Trotting Meeting, competed unsuccessfully at Wanganui and Wairarapa. He was sired by Jay Beldon, by Judge Beldon '(imported from New South Wales), where he. sired Bellman, a successful performer- on Dominion tracks in heavy going, and who is making a name at the stud in Southland. In the Hawkefc Bay Hurdle*, Multiply (10.10) has been placed within 71b of Hereford and 41b of Player, both good performers over hurdles. It would not be surprising if Multiply was allowed to drop out of the Hastings race. The Hawkes Bay-owned Ngaraima (a double winner at Manawatu Trotting Meeting) has been going a^ long time. She won a mile race in 2min 23sec at the Metropolitan Meeting at Ohriatchurch in August, 1908. Sne ran second in the big event on each day of the Wanganui Meeting in March. Ngaraima was sired by King George, by imported Electioneer, from Vim, a daughter of Burlington, who won races on the flat and over hurdles in Canterbury., On the first occasion that Liberator/ won the New Zealand Grand Nationad Hurdle Race he incurred 71b penalt/y ' for the New Zealand Cup. The pedigree of the Cantertyuvy madden, Irvar, a place-getter in t/ne principal event at the Manawatu TroAt/ng Meeting, makes interesting reading. He is by Young Irvington, from Addigzar, by Viking from Mercy, by FJtoneyhurst (C.J.C. Derby winner). A fullsister to Mercy was named Stra, targem. The Manawatu Hunt Club's Meeting will be held at the Awapuni totarse on 21st July, the Wednesday following the Wellington Meeting. The Woodlands Hunt Club Meeting will be h<M on 29th July (the day after the Pahiatua, Racing Club's Meeting), and the 'Rangitikei Hunt Club's Meeting on 2nd September (the day following the Ma/ ton Jockey Club's Meeting). The Da/inevirke Hunt Club and Jockey Club follow a week later, and the Hawkes Baj'' Hunt, to be held the day prior to tho Hawkes Bay Spring Meeting, complete?, the circuit of hunt meetings. / The winner of the Maiden Handicap at the Manawatu Trotfing Club's Meeting, Warlock, is one Ai the progeny of the American horse Hal Zolock, winner of the President's Handicap, two miles, in 4min 41sec, at the Auckland Summer Meeting this season. / Warlock is owned by Mr. H. J. Woo/dfield, a steward of the Manawatu Clv) 1 '). Although it was Mb first start he was sent out favourite, and the win was 'popular. The Marton Jbckey Club is donating £5 per month ' to . the Belgian Relief Fund. Although Celtic was beaten in tho principal ev/ent, the Hawera contingent did fairly vtfetl at Manawatu. Prinzora (runner-up to Rothschild Excelsior in the Maideii at Wanganiu) scored in the Stewards' Handicap, and Joan of Arc was seco/id in the Ladies' Bracelet. Prinzora ' i* a three-year-old by Prinz, by Vali/nt— 'Fraulein (dam of Fritz, Franz, 'Frederick, and The Heir). Prioi/ to the start of the Campbell Hurdle» Race at Ellerslie on Monday, ' [mmensity was found to have broken a blood, vessel in the head after doing her prelvminary. ' Permission was given to withdraw her from the race. The sum of £377 was invested on the 'Hawkes Bay performer, and this was lost to backers. The* Cai'terton-owned Monsoon won f/hp two-mile trotters racps> at Wanganui. VVtdtarapa. »ttd Manawatu. He put up /the bdst time at M&nawabu. smitt 6
l-ssec. Monsoon is by Gossoon (a successful performer in the South Island) by Del Paso, an American horse imported by Sir George M'Lean. Gossoon is also the sire of Too/doon (4min 44sec), a halfsister ( to Win,' Soon (the New Zealand Cup winner). B. Deeley's success in the Fitzroy Welter on the concluding day of the Auckland fleeting has increased his total to 91 .j The Waimate- Plains Trotting Club will hold its first meeting with a totalisator at the Hawera course on 28th July. Emperador, Bimeter, and Corrie arrived from Auckland yesterday and continued their journey South last night. J. Ayres brought Ladoga back at .thesame lime. •
