A French eye-witness supplies notes from the diary of a German captain vhose body was amongst the four thousand Germans found on tho slopes of Notre Dame de Loi'ette. was impracticable, owing to the confusion of the sectors, and his guide was unable to lead him. With each falling shell some of the soldiers decamped. Tlie last page of the diary says : "We have, been without support for t days. The romnants of our trenches have been destroyed, and I ani caught like a rat in a trap. My nerves are gone. The fire of the enemy is indescribable."
