AUSTRALIAN ARMY CONTRACTS
MR. KIDMAN'S REPLY TO CHARGES. SYDNEY, 27th May. In reference to yesterday's cable concerning Defence contracts, Mr. Kidman, in a statement published in the press, protests vehemently against, the department permitting the publication, more especially as, the matter being sub judice, the papers cannot give his side of the question. He points out that it was only after failure for months to obtain payment of moneys due to him, and after he had issued a writ for nearly £9000 and notified the department that he was about to issue writs for about £5000 more, that the proceedings in question were instituted. Mr. Kidman adds that the public will be astounded when it learns of the treatment he has.received.^ In spite of the matters in question he is still by far the largest contractor for the supply of foodstuffs for the military forces. In the Senate Senator Pearce (Minister for Defence) stated that 2940 enemy subjects were interned in Australia.
