SALVATION ARMY

An interesting service was conducted in the_ Vivian-street Citadel last night by Adjutant Bladin. The service was announced as a "Public auction sale of thirty children to be sold without reserve, the who_ie to be knocked down to the highest bidder, the parent* being consenting parties to the sale." The physical and mental capabilities of the children were demonstrated by various action songs, recitations, etc., and th.6 conditions Of sale were read, the» chief one being that bidders must make provision for the highest welfare of the children, both in this life and the life to come. Various bidders came forward representing the following :— Self-Interest, Sport, Pleasure, Fashion, Wealth, Education, Nominal Christianity, and True Religion, each one asserting that what they_ represented was the grand end to attain in life. The last bidder, True Religion, skilfully pointed out that all the previous bids were failures, although some of them had much to commend them ; "True t Religion" alone made satisfactory provision for the "life that now is and that which is to come." The children were therefore knocked down to "True Religion.' 1 The moral and spiritual lesson conveyed was much appreciated by those present.
