FREE KINDERGARTENS

A grant of £100 has been voted by the City Council to the Riehmohd Free Kindergarten, to assist in the upkeep of the four schools conducted for the young, tn moving tho adoption of this section of the Finance CommitleVu report, the Mayor said last night that tho council could not dissociate itself from the wbrk being undertaken by the Kindergarten. _ If any councillor doubted this, let him visit one of the four schools. Though they were going to be hardpressed for money, they could well afford £100 out of the city fund* for this purpose. The vote did not pass without opposition. Councillors M'Kenzie and Fitzgerald suggested that Kindergarten work was quite a Government matter, while Councillor Bennett warned the council that another body was carrying on similar work What would be said if that body also applied for a grant. " Because the Government lift* neglected its duty," said Councillor Wright, "why should we?" The precedent of subsidising education had already been laid down in the payment of a subsidy for technical education. " tt is our duty," said Councillor Hutchesoll. "to support what will make for gooa citizenship and uplift the people. We subsidise 'bands, we employ an organist, and we should recognise the efforts of these noble women. The vote was agreed to by 12 votes to 4.
