TURKISH CAMPAIGN
ENEMY ATTACK SHATTERED AUSTRALASIANS DEFEAT CRACK ARMY CORPS. TURKS' HEAVY CASUALTIES. (Received May 27, 8.20 a.m.) PARIS, 26th May. The recent Turkish attack near Gaba Tepe was carefully prepared. General Yon Sanders's objects in in- | flicting a -check to the Allies were to | raise the spirits of the Turks and reassure the public, which is profoundly I impressed by the heavy Turkish losses. j General Yon Sanders brought, up his First Army Corps, a crack organisation which had been reserved for the defence of Constantinople. Their landing was greatly hampered by a bombardment from aeroplanes. Two divisions attacked the Australians and New Zealanders at night on 18th May, but the Turks were completely beaten, losing 2000 killed and 5000 wounded. At the south end of the Peninsula the French were faced by strong defensive works. In fierce bayonet and hand grenade fighting, a colonial infantryman named Lalkrte took the lead Entering a Turkish trench he threw grenades, stopped a counter-attack, and prevented the machine-guns being used until he fell wounded. (Received May 27, 1 a.m.) ATHENS, 26th May. Reports from Mitylene state that fierce fighting is in progress on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The Turks are retreating.
