CARNIVAL NOTES

Among the latest offers of help to the tramways candidate (Dr. Platts-Mills) is one by Miss Campbell to give an entertainment in the Town Hall. A horse has also been offered, and will be exhibited in the streets by a lady rider. The Bristol Piano Co. has donated a British piano, by Sames. Mr. Geo. Snelson, of Palmerston North, has presented a collection of New Zealand ferns. A euchre party and dance will be tendered to Dr. Platts-Mills in St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, to-morrow evening. A senior cadet band visited Trentham last night in the interests of the soldiers' candidate, Messrs. Munt, Cottrell, and Co. providing the conveyance free of charge. The model cottages to be raffled by the staff of the Labour Department, having been renovated and refurnished, will be exhibited in the procession on Saturday. The Department is not working for any particular candidate, and tickets bought m the raffle carry votes for any of the competitors. All persons willing to lend motor-cars for the procession are asked to communicate with Mr. J. W. Collins, Labour Department, telephone No. 630 A. The public servants of Wellington are taking an active part in the battle for the Carnival throne. The programme includes a procession leaving the Departmental Buildings at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday next, a jumble sale at the W.C.T.U. Rooms, Constable-stTeet, opening on the same day at 2 p.m., 'a stall at the Town Hall Carnival, and also at the Newtown Park Carnival, and a "novelty" ball at the Town Hall on Friday, 11th June. A feature of the procession will be a mock court. The residents of Onslow Borough have agreed to / unite with the Public Service for carnival purposes. The Cafe Chantant, organised by soft goods workers to further the combined drapers' candidate, Miss Low, ■will be held in the Town Hail, to-night, and on Friday and Saturday, and promises to be a gay continental effort. An illuminated car will leave Newtown at 7 o'clock this evening for Lyall Bay, where the Highland Pipe Band will play a programme of music. The Mayor has received from Mr. Charles Gray, of Pahautanui, the offer of a residential section of land at Pukerua, near Paekakariki. to be sold in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Mr. F. W. Manton. chairman of the Commercial Travelled' Carnival Committee, made a special trip to Palmerston yesterday, and received many substantial tokens of support from the business houses to further the interests of Miss Kitty Doughty, the warehousemen's candidate for queen.
