A NEW WAREHOUSE

J. B. Clarkson and Co., Ltd., have recently (purchased a city section with a frontage of 165 ft to Taranaki'street by a deptli of 172 ft. Access to the centre of the block is also obtained off Dixonstreet by way of Taranaki-place. Mr. J. M. Dawson, architect, has prepared plans for a five-story warehouse ; a contract for the first part of which has been let to Messrs. Sanders Bros., builders, and is now well under way. Tenders will be invited for the completion of the whole scheme at a later date. The portior now being orected is to give the additional storage space. The new store is to have a wide cart dock, and overhead travelling cranes, which will raise the goods directly from the lorries and distribute them to any part of the store. Being the firm's headquarters and distributing centre for the many branches throughout New Zealand, the office accommodation will take up the greater portion of the fifth floor, and will have a staff of aboiU t>hirity-,five. The remainder of this floor and the whole of the fourth floor will be devoted to showrooms. The other floors will be divided off into the different departments for assembling mail orders, storage, etc., and all departments will be in direct communication with each other and the offices by a very complete system of telephones. Two electric lift* are to be installed, one for passengers and the other for goods, the latter bping capable of raisine? 2^ tons. A' special feature new to New Zealand will be fire-proof, under-ground tanks for motor spirit jxnd different oils in bulk. The design of the devotion to Taranaki-street is imposing, yet simple. Ono or two of these have been in the occupation of the present tenants for over 30 years. Three of the cottages have already been removed.
