TO STOP RACE MEETINGS
LORD ROSEBERY SAYS IT IS NOT NECESSARY. LONDON, sth March. Lord Rosebery, in a letter to the newspapers, protests against the suggestion to stop racing. He says that if it ceases altogether, thoroughbred horses, which are essential to the army, will disappear. "Our Allies know that Englishmen do not think it necessary to put up the shutters because they are engaged in war. Epsom and xiscot races were held throughout the Napoleonic wars, and the winner of the Derby-was announced in genera] orders during the Crimea campaign."
