THE VICTORY AT LODZ
DEARLY BOUGHT, BUT DECISIVE (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) (Received December 11, 8 a.m.) LONDON, 10th December. The military correspondent of the Berliner Tageblatt writes : "The victory at Lodz was dearly bought, but it was decisive. The Russian centres were broken, and her war plans have failed. "If the Germans are strong enough to separate the northern and southern Russian armies, which is probable, then General yon Hindenburg's plans will be crowned with success." (Press Association.) RUSSIAN LOSSES DENIED PETROGRAD, 10th December. An official statement denies the German reports of< heavy Russian losses at Lodz, which the Russians abandoned at midnight on 6th December. The Germans remained inactive before the empty trendies until next day, when they occupied them. REINFORCEMENTS FOR THE TSAR'S ARMY (Received December 11, 9 a.m.) COPENHAGEN, 10th December. Endless lines of trains are passing through Warsaw westwards, containing fresh Russian troops, mostly Siberians and Cossacks. Warsaw is sheltering seventy thousand refuge.es from the fearful devastation in Poland. OPERATIONS ALONG THE VISTULA PETROGRAD, 10th December. With the assistance of fresh army corps and cavalry divisions, the Germans are largely extending their operations along the Vistula, and while maintaining their attack on the Russian centre, are attempting to cut the railway communicaions behind Warsaw by means of a raid from Mlawa, to which they have made a rapid and secret transfer of troops.
DESPERATE ATTACKS BY THE GERMANS Official. — " Fighting in the Mlawa region is now less stubborn. Under cover of darkness, the Germans on 7th December made repeated attempts in compact columns along the Iloff-Glowno front We decimated the enemy under the rays of our searchlights. The Germans unsuccessfully renewed the attack, and desperate fighting took place on Bth December. "On the Lowicz-Iloff front, fighting continues. In the Piotrkow region each side has alternately taken the offensive. " South of Cracow two attempts to pierce out front were repulsed with heavy loss.
