IN SOUTH AFRICA
THE REBELLION ENDED GENERAL BOTHA'S INTENTION ' (Received December 11, 9.30 a.m.) , , PRETORIA, 10th December. Twelve hundred Free State rebels surrendered on Tuesday. General Botha announces that the rebellion has ended. He now proceeds against German South- West Africa. The surrender of the rebels was the direct outcome of General Botha's operations in the Reitz district, which culminated on the 4th in the capture of seven hundred men, and two hundred others surrendered. General Botha announces : "Only small bands remain in the Free State, for which the police force suffice. The people's patriotic sacrifices had converted a grave danger into a means of cementing the union. Just punishment will be meted out, but I appeal for forbearance and forgiveness." The General added : "Mavitz and Kemp will seek to invade the Union. Our next duty will be to deal with that danger, and make it impossible for German South-West Africa to be used as a base against the Union in the future."
