U.S. DEFENCES
WHAT IS REQUIRED NO INVESTIGATION NECESSARY. (Received December 8, 1.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, 7th December. Mr. Julius Kahn, speaking before the House of Representatives Naval Committee, contended that 500,000 men were needed' in the Regular Army, and 500,000 in the Militia, in order to place the United States on a safe footing. Large additions to the navy were needed, also_ improved fortifications.' President Wilson fully discussed Mr. Gardner's proposal for the investigation of the defences of the States, and issued a statement that nothing would be gained by an investigation. Every fact of importance was already available to members of both Houses.
