In France matters are still quiet, action being maintained by- the artillery. A correspondent of The Times gives it out that our position has never been more secure than it is to-day — so much so that holiday leave is being granted to officers and men. In Belgium the Allies are preparing for an attack near Dixmude, and there has been heavy infantry fighting south of Middlekerke. Progress is reported in other quarters. There are further indications of the discontent among the Bavarian troops. They complain that the Kaiser is sacrificing them by always placing them in the firing line. It may be noted that the Prussian Guard, Germany's crack corps, has been sent to the rear to recuperate. From well informed circles comes the statement that Germany has lost two million men, sickness accounting for half a million. On the Russian side, an the Plock region, there have been desperate encounters, the combatants in one case fighting with their fists. Russia continues to advance on the Czenstochowa-Cracow line, after .violent offensive movements by .the Austrians and Germans, who aTe striving to deliver a blow at the heart of Poland so as to divert the invasion of Silesia. There is alarm in Budapest, as the Russians are cutting off the retreat of the , Austrians in 'Hungary. Reports from the Balkans describe the situation there as more grave.
