MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Police cases at the Magistrate's Court to-day were taken before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. Bryda Shcehan, a young woman, but an old offender, admitted drunkenness, but denied being idle and disorderly. According to the evidence tho Basin Reserve was her favourite resort, and she made herself a nuisance in that locality. Inspector Hendrey said she had been four times previously convicted as an idle and disorderly person. She asked for another chance, but his Worship reminded her lof the fact that she had al* ready had many chances. A term of gaol would do her good. For insobriety she was fined £1, in default, three days in gaol, and on the major charge a sentence of two mohths was imposed. His Worship also informed Michael Gregory, charged with drunkenness, that a term of imprisonment would do him good. Gregory was ordered to be put to hard ia-bour for a period of one month. William Connelly, for insobriety, was fined £2, in default seven days in gaol, and Thomas Watson and Andrew Soutter were fined 20s and 10s respectively. The usual alternatives were fixed. Several first offenders were leniently dealt with. "Yes, I'm guilty, but it's the first time I've been before the Court in my life,' said Robert Downcs Kelsall, charged with using obscene language in WiDiß' street. He was fined £3, or ordered to Spend one mqnth in custody. Me asked for time to pay, but he was informed that the police would assist in collecting the money if it is available.
