CHESS
LOCAL TOURNAMENTS. The annual handicap tourney of the Working Men's Club was completed last week, the final scores of the eight prizewinners being as follow :—
It will be noted that there are three ties, the third and fourth ■ prizes being divided by Messrs. Rekl and Key, the filth and sixth by Messrs. Buigess and Jensen, and the seventh and special by Messrs. Gray and Mowtell. It has been jocularly remarked that this is not Featonby's "first offence" in the matter of topping the poll, as lie won the first prize of the Wellington South Club's 1907 tourney. Messrs. Larking. C. Reid, and Coulter made the best scores of the non-prize-winners, each of them missing the prize-list by only one point. The above prizes and those won in the annual draughts tourney (which is 'rapidly approaching completion) will be presented at an early date. At this function a letter will be considered which has beer received from the New Zealand Chess Association, , stating that entries for the next championship congress close on the 12th December, and asking for an expression of opinion as to whether or not the games played in this congress (which opens in Christchurch on Boxing Day) should be published in book form,
