CROSSES THE VISTULA NORTH OF IVANGOROD FOREST SET ON FIRE (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) (Received October 30, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, 29th October. Berlin reports that a new Russian army has crossed the Vistula, north of Ivangorod. • A correspondent writes that during the fighting opposite Kozienice (a few miles north-west of Ivangorod), the Germans filled the thick woods with troops, including heavy artillery. Several small bodies' of Russians stalked the German lines and set fire to the forest. The wind aiding," the conflagration spread with terrible rapidity, and a thousand Germans were suffocated or burned to death. A few got away. ' , (Received October 30, 9.30 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, 29fch October. ■It is officially stated at Vienna that the Austrians southward of Ivangorod engaged in desperate battle with Russians, whose numbers were vastly superior. v CONFLICT CONDUCTED FIERCELY PETROGRAD, 28th October.' The conflict before Warsaw was conducted fiercely. For five days long trains of 'wounded came. in, together with bands of German and Austrian prisoners. Villages were burning in all directions. The German ahells burst within four miles of the town, yefc the city remained thronged with people. Even the aerial^visitations did not occasion any panic, although fifty were killed and ninety-nine injured. Villages were taken and retaken many times in the fluctuations of the battle. The German trenches were admirably constructed, as for a. long stay. The precision of the Russian artillery wrought destruction among the invaders. Then the Russians forced back the Gorman, wing beyond the Kalosch road, while the cavalry from the north cut into their rear. The Russians crossed over ten milrs south of Warsaw, unopposed, and found that the German retirement had begun, being afraid of being caught* ia a vice by the .Russian armies operating north and east. The retirement was unexpected. GERMAN ADMISSION LONDON, 29th October. An official Berlin message states that the Germans and Austriijns have been compelled to retreat from Poland before fresh Russian troops from Ivangorod (on the Vistula, sixty miles southward of Warsaw) and Warsaw. The German reserves will change formation, in accordance with the new circumstances.. WARSAW BOMBARDED BY AN AIR-FLEET LONDON, 29th October. A Stockholm report states that Warsaw was bombarded by a German air fleet. The inhabitants were horrified at seeing the Zeppelins approach. Many aeioplanes also swooped upon the town, and dropped a shower of bombs. The Russian eons, mounted on conspicuous buildings, vigorously replied. t AUSTRIANS HURRIED TO GALICIA AND SERVIA (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) * (Received October 30, 8.30 a.m.) % LONDON, 29th October. Trieste reports that a majority of the Austrians who have been guarding the Irent frontier have been sent in hot haste to Galicia, and Servia. The results of the levy en masse of Austrians has proved unsatisfactory. Reservists summoned to the colours are expected to provide their own boots, winter clothing, and canteens, as the army stores are completely exhausted.
