SPEECH BY BRITISH PRIME MINISTER
NATION HAS RESPONDED NOBLY. (TIIIRS IMD irSHIT SON URYICIB.) LONDON, 25th October. The Prime Minister, Mr. Asquith, in a message to the Scottish Liberals, says that the nation has responded nobly to the call for men, but more are needed to complete the new armies. He is watching with pride and euro hopes the progress of our arms by seaand land. THE POSITION AT VERDUM FALSE GERMAN REPORTS. DAY OF THE FIXED FORT HAS GONE. (HMBS AND SYDNBT SUN SERVICES.) LONDON, 25th October. A correspondent, describing the position at Verdun, says that the German papers reported that the investment of the fortress had begun, when as a matter of fact the guns of the forts had never once been fired., The garrison is acting a* a field force, and has had several encounters with the army from Metz, but that is all. There is no prospeel of the fall of Verdun while the army in the field can prevent the Germans getting within range of the forts, which they are apparently unable to do. The whole history of the war has proved the utter uselessness of forts under pre« sent conditions. The day of the fixed fort has gone.
