PROCESSION AND COMPETITIONS. Having come to be recognised as the chief holiday outing of the year for Hutt Valley people, the Petone Labour Day Carnival is always keenly looked forward to. The committee which had in hand the arrangements for yesterday's fuuction had spared no .effort or enterprise, and is to be congratulated on tho Tesult of its work. Proceedings commenced with a fancydress procession, which was marshalled up at the railway station. The crowds ot peoplo which lined the main street to watch the procession on its way to the Recreation Ground were rewarded by a fine sight, for everything had been done in a thorough manner, and the result was a spectacle of more than passing interest. Shortly after 10 o'clock the procession left the starting point in tho following order : — Petone Municipal Band (playing patriotic airs), United Fire Brigades, Friendly Societies, tradesmen's turnouts and others, mounted horses (adultb), mounted horses (children), decorated bicycles (adults and children in fancy costumes), adults and children (in fancy costume, talking), hand-drawn vehicles, tableaux and groups. The marshals were Messrs. Townisend, Woods, Lcppcr, Chuvchouse, and Cox. PROCESSION AWARDS. Tho judged of the children's proca»< &ion made their awards ac follow;—
National dress, M. Purcell 1, Ruby Philp 2; ancient, Mary Pollock 1, Violet Short 2; original, Effie Clarke 1, Violet Bittle 2; patriotic, Doris Ball 1, Nellie Whittaker 2; historical, Rena Moore 1, Kathleen Anderson 2; most comical, L. Pollock 1, W. Skinner 2. A spocial prize for the best fancy dress was awarded to Lily Buckley. Tableau groups, Leila Olseu and Jean Clarke 1, Susie Aitcheson 2; smal' hand-drawn vehicles, Rita Boyd 1, Frank Harrison 2, Clem Usma 3, Doris Bayan 4. In addition to the above 40 spectal prizes were awarded. Procession prizes were also awarded as under :— Decorated bicycle (men's section), E. Boyd 1, (ladies' section) Miss Grant 1 ; ladies' and gentlemen's fancy costume, Cornelius Ryan 1, W. Ward and party received a special prize in this section. Industrial display : N. Doneghue 1, Couchman's Laundry 2. Tradesmen's Display: Boden and. Prfwell 1, T. Moseley 2. Cordial manufacturers' display : D. M'Manus. De-co-rated lorry : Cunningham Bros. 1, King Bros. 2. Two-horse lorry : A. C. Wright and Co. 1 and special. Dogcarts : J. Corson 1, A. Parker 2. Two horses and dray : Petone Borough Council. Single horse and dray : R. Appe. Fancy costume: H. Styles (Indian Chief). Mounted boy: R. S. Styles. Mounted lady : Miss Bird. Special pnze : Miss Phoebe Kirkwood. OTHER RESULTS. Three men hose and hydrant: Railway Workshops, 45 2-ss€c, 1; Gear Co., 4Gses, 2. (The Lower Hutt Brigade thus won Hie shield.) W. L. Jenness's trophy (three men hose and. double-headed hydrant) : Gear Co., 29 4-s&ec, 1; Petone" No. 1, 32sec, 2; Hutti 34sec, 3. A hall-forcing competition between Hutt and Pu'one teams was won by the latter. A successful day's colebratfon was brought to a close by a plain and fanoy dress dance in the Petone Drill-hall
