LABOUR DAY

THE SCENE AT THE PARK A DAY OUT FOR THE CHILDREN. After yesterday's successful procession Labour Day celebrations were continued at Newtown Park, which at noon presented a gay scene. The attendance at this hour numbered about two thousand, but increased considerably as the afternoon wore on. Children predominated in the crowd. It was a children's day out, more than , anybody else's, and they revelled in thtt proceedings. There were numerous sideahosvs — including Hoop-la men, Indian dart game, and the Ocean Wave. Picnic parties scattered themselves all over the Park, and the committee provided milk and various other necessaries, and the children were kept well supplied with lollies and toys. There was a lengthy sports programme arranged, and the entries were large, especially in the event* for boys and girls. Substantial prizes were donated by various city firms and business men. Included among those present were Sir Joseph Ward and Lady Ward, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), and several City Councillors. Tho arrangements, carried out under the direction of Mr. L. M. A.. Rearden, were most complete. An energetic committee worked hard, and did exceedingly well. In the afternoon the attendarice mounted up to between 5000 and 6000, and the gathering was bright and exceedingly enthusiastic. The Highland dancing attracted many entrants, and considerable interest was taken in the baby show for babies under twelve months. Proud mothers submitted their offspring to the judges, and the rivalry was keen. Following are tho results of the sports events : — 100 yds Committeemen's Eace.— H. Heap 1, T.
