GERMAN SPIES

EXCEEDINGLY WELL INFORMED. SEVERAL SHOT. LONDON, 29th September. The Germans seem singularly well informed of the whereabouts of the Allies. Once a cavalry division dismounted under the shelter of a wooded hill, and immediately shrapnel burst above them. Knowing themselves to be invisible, the cavalry searched the wood and discovered German officers and a civilian operating a field telephone. They shot tho civilian and took the officers 2>risoners. In Reims a French General occupied a house at night, and shells immediately burst, killing a colonel. The staff discovered a spy in the next house signalling the whereabouts by means of lights). Three spies, disguised as French officers, in a motor-car, and a fourth in woman's attire, on a. bicycle, were stopped on Saturday at St. Die, in tho Vosges, while attempting to rush the linos. While they were being examined a horseman, in the uniform of a French major, rode lip and congratulated the captain on his vigilance. When asked to show his papers he produced a forged pass. All were shot. SCAREMONGERS HOTLY CONDEMNED BY FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER. (Received September 30, 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Prime Minister (Mr. Andrew Fisher) hotly condemns the circulation of rumours of supposed British reverses and disasters to the Australian Navy. The circulators ought to be punished with the utmost rigour of the law.
