VILLAGES DESTROYED

HEAVY LOSSES SUSTAINED BY THE ENEMY. • LONDON, 22nd September. A number of villages in the neighbourhood of Philippeville and Givet, in the south of Belgium, were destroyed by the Germans. The inhabitants resisted, inflicting heavy losses on the Germans, who compelled fifty civilians to bury the German dead. Ihey ordered . them to dig a, last pit, and when, this was done, forty-eight of the civilians were shot, the remaining two being forced to bury them.
