CAUSES OF INSANITY

That position of the annual report on the Mental Hospitals of the Dominion which deals with the principal assigned causes of insanity furnishes interesting reading. A few of fcho principal and most interesting are as under : — Alcohol, 79 males, 13 females; syphilis 40 males, 3 females ; dissolute habits 1 male, 3 females; heredity 71 males, 69 females; puberty and adolescence 26 males, 19 females; prolonged mental stress 22 males, 25 females. Of those admitted during last year, it is also interesting to note, 272 males and 137 females were single; 166 males and 138 females were married ; and 2& males and 43 females Were widowed.
