FROZEN MEAT
♦ DIFFICULTIES OF SHIPMENT. The Government was asked by Mt. I Nosworthy _in the House of Representatives last night whether it would guarantee the "working of one of the freezing works in Canterbury in order t to cope with the extraordinary demand jfor frozen mutton owing to tlie shortage of feed in Canterbury. , The Prime Minister said he would ask the Department of Agriculture to look into the matter. If it becarhe necessary to do what was suggested lie would be glad to do what was possible. Sir Joseph Ward asked if the- Prime Minister would at the same time consider a matter from Southland "whidh had already been brought under his notice. In Southland the freezing works had large quantities of meat in storta which they had arranged to ship befotjo the -war commenced. The difficulty now was that the Government having taken the troopships, including the treezing" space, shippers, could not get their meat away. There was a veTy anxious feeling on the part of many people concerned. The Prime Minister said he had looked into the q\ieetaon a few days ago. The position was that the whole of the refrigerating /space on the transports wasalready taken up. He asked the Department of Agriculture to ascertain now many vessels would be available in the next few weeks, and he was informed that within the next four week* fourteen ships will arive here. Everyone of them had refrigerating spaqe. He did not know whether it was possible to arrange for one of them to load at Bluff, but he would endeavour to ascertain the following day. In regard to oats, Sir Joseph Ward had stated to him that the Government had paid the carriage of oats to Wellington from other ports. That -was not the case. The Imperial Government had bought a, large, quantity of New Zealand oats in London from agents and 'merchants in New Zealand*, and asked the New Zealand Government to have them shipped on the transports. That was all the New Zealand Government had to do with them.
