PURCHASE OF SUBMARINES. BRITAIN OFFERED USB OF CRU^SEES. OTTAWA, 6th August. The Canadian, Government has purchased two submarines, which are building at Seattle for the Chilian GoVern« ment. OTTAWA, sth August. The Canadian Government has offered the Canadian cruisers Rainbow and Niobe to the British Government for use anywhere in the Enipire. The Duke of Connaught, Govornor-'Cten-j eral, has telegraphed to tho King \ that Canada was united from tho Atlantic to the Pacific in defence of the Empire. [H.M.S. Niobe is a first-class protected cruiser of 11,000 tons, built in 1897. Her main, armament consists of 16 six-inch gune % and four 18-inch submerged torpedo tubes. She has a speed of 20.5 knots. H.M.S. Rainbow is a second-class protected cruiser of 3600 tons, built in 1891. Her main armament consists of two sixinch guns.
