EX-NAVAL MEN
OFFER TO MAN THE GUNS. Mr. V. R. Meredith presided over a meeting of ex-mfcmbers of the Wellington Navals held last night for the pur"pose of forming gun detachments. He stated that from information received the Defence Headquarters would have some difficulty in manning the 8-inch guns. The idea of the conveners was that as most of them were married men with businesses, they should raise as many men, as possible to man the guns, and thus enable them to have reliefs. If this were done, the forts would always be under control, and it would not interfere with their various occupations to any great extent in the meantime. They would not be interfering with the Territorials in any way, as they would go in and foim their own unit. Major A. R. Hislop said that if the Defence Department was really shorthanded he had no doubt that the "old boys" would come forward if lequired. It was purely a voluntary movement on their part. Over 100 names of those willing to offer services were handed in, and further volunteers are expected.
