At a meeting of combined unionists it was decided : "That this meeting of combined unionists of Palmerston North, recognising that the time has arrived when the constituency should be represented by Labour, urges upon the Social Democratic Party the necessity of immediately taking steps to select a candidate to contest the Palmerston North seat at the forthcoming election, in the interests of Labour."
