WHITE SLAVERY

A pretty young widow was found terribly beaten &nd almost insane in a* deserted house. - Documents 'which were seized revealed the operations o*a gang of white slavers. Two hundred women are under their direction in rosorts established in leading towns in the Eastern States. The corres pomfenne found there described the stations to which the women were to bo sent in squads as' performers of a, vaudeville circuit. . A large force of procurers was engaged trapping women into the system, the agents receiving ten dollars for each recruit. An informant declares she did not fear police interference, because she paid five thousand dollars monthly-to the police for protection. The leader of the gang is an Italian, who is the head of the Artichoke Trust, which intimidates ped'.ars and fruit dealers who will not buy from it. The letters disclose the fact that the women wer* regarded like sacks of potatoes, the managers complaining of not having received good shipment of the goods.
