CHESS
WELLINGTON CLUB. A committee meeting was held in the Wellington Chess Club's rooms on Wednesday evening, Mi*. W. F. Baijraud (president) occupying the chair. Messrs. Barnes, Pell, and Hill were elected as the Match Committee for the ensuing year. A slight alteration was made in one of the rules governing the "ladder" competitions, so that a player who fails to capture a rung may in future rechallenge his victor after a period of six weeks (instead of having to wait three months, as heretofore). It was decided to make a reduction in the entrance fee for the annual Petherick tourney (handicap) from 2s 6d, at which it has stood for many years past, to Is, the consequent loss to the prize fund being more than made good by donations from the president and his predecessor.
