A HARD FOUGHT GAME* WIN FOR TARANAKL (IT TELBGRirn.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) HAWERA, 27th June. The Raiifurly SMeld match, Taranaki v. Wanganui, -was played to-day at the Hawera Show Ground. Taranaki were without the services of Roberts, Cain, and Loveridge. The weather was fine and the ground in fair order. Taranaki kicked off and play consisted of mostly forward rushes. Taranaki then attacked and wore in Wanganni's quarters for some time. Birchall marked and thus stopped a good attempt t6 score. Taranaki again returned to the attack and Wanganui was hard pressed to prevent a score. The Taranaki forward rushes were very deadly. Colman. and Taylor being always on' the ball. Wanganui got on a good passing rush and succeeded in carrying play to their opponents' quarters. Here ensued scores of loose lushes, mostly in favour of Taranaki. Taranaki got on a great rush but Lockett took the ball from the toes of the forwards and relieved the pressure. Not to be denied, Taranaki forwards came back in great style, but over-eagerness spoilt a good chance. Collier making a weak kick gave Meuh o- chance to centre, and soon afterwards a free kick gave Stohr a chance, which he took, landing a fine goal. Then Brown, getting a pass clean away to Cameron thence to Whittington and on to Young, the last-named galloped for the l\ne, but was brought down. Then Wanganui, after a good dash by Temperton, carried play to Taranaki's goal, but Collier missed ,a good chance. Taranaki, in an irresistible forward rush, reversed the play and Wanganui forced. Again Taranaki came down and Smith was almost over. Again camo the Taranaki vanguard, and from a scrum Brown sent out to Cameron and thence to Colman, who cut in and dashed over the line after a brilliant run. Stohr made no mistake witn the kick. Taranaki 14 Wanganui 3 After the kick-off, Wanganui pressed, but in a short time back came the charging forwards, and the Taranaki backs got on one of the finest passing rushes of the game, the ball passing through the hands of all the backs ngain and again. Taranaki kept up the attack, but there was no result till Brown passed out to Cameron, Colman and Whittington, *the last-named dashing over at the corner. No goal resulted.
