PONEKE'S EASY WIN.
St. James and Poneke took the field on No. 2 ground at the Athletic Park. Play was open and fast at the start, and it was not many minutes before Poneke were hammering away near their opponents' goal-line. Here Spillane made un opening, but M'Taggart was pushed out near the corner. Poneke continued to press, and St. James were defending strenuously and effectually. After a series of disorganised scrambles they carried the ball to the Poneke line, and twice they weie almost across. Then Poneko camo from half-way. Israel sending the leather to Edwards, who ran prettily on and passed to M'Taggart, who easily thwarted a poor attempt to stop him by the St. James full-back, and ciossed. Gardner kicked a tine goal. s—o.5 — 0. Give-and-take play ensued, but at last St. James were rewarded; bad handling by tho Poneke backs let M'lnerney over near the corner, and Crewes placed a nice goal. 6—5.6 — 5. Poneke were soon pressing, and forced St. James, but later St. James carried play into hostile territory, but wei y e thwarted by Fisher, who saved in the nick of time. The scene of action was changed, and Mummery, the St. James full-back, made .i weak attempt to clear his line, and Tilyard securing the ball, first lost it, then secured it again, and scored. Gardner's kick went short. B—s.8 — 5. The opening of the second spell saw Poneke, busy early. Spillane got away, made a useful opening at quarter-way, and passed to Tilyard, who sent it on to Edwards. ' (The last-named cut in prettily, and then passed to Tilyard, who had come round egain. It was a pretty piece of work, and Tilyard easily scored. Gardner placed an easy goal. 13 — 5. Poneke came again, and M'Taggart crossed in style. Gardner made another nice but unsuccessful kick. 16 — 5. Then Edwards again got going at half-way, and after a nice run passed to Israel, who touched down. Gardner's kick failed. 19 — 5. Towards the end, Donnehy scored for Poneke after a "forward scramble, but no goal resulted, and the game finished: Poneke 22, St. James 5. Mr. Keys was referee.
