PETONE DEFEAT MELROSE.

v Petone had a day out on their own ground, defeating Melrose by 22 points to nil. From this score it would appear that the suburbanites had matters all their own way, but such was not the case. They certainly held a distinct advantage in weight, while their play was also superior, but it was the plucky manner in which the lighter team stuck to it that made the game interesting. A few minutes after the commencement misfortune met the latter, and as a result they lost the services of their best forward, Gilchrist, who received a nasty injury to his arm when tackling an opponent. When play was resumed Petone made several unsuccessful rushes for the goal-line, until Price broke through ancf drew first blood. M'Farlane added the major points. s—o. Still attacking. Petone were awarded a free kick in a good position, and M'Farlane goaled. B—o. The opening stages of the second spell saw Petone attacking strongly, and before long W. Ryan got possession, and wound up a clever piece of play by scoring near the goal-posts. The kick failed. 11 — 0. Not downhearted, the reds played with determination, and for a time kept the bines well away from the line. At length, from a forward rush, Udy .managed to scramble over, and M'Farlane converted. 16 — 0. This had the effect of instilling even more vigour into the Melrose players, and Twomey headed a rush into Petone's quarters. This player, however, was injured, and play had to be suspended for a few minutes until he recovered. A free kick gave Petone the advantage, and securing the ball from" a scrum, Udy got over near the corner. M'Farlane Found the kick too difficult. 9-0. Just on the call of time E. Ryan secured a try, making the final score : —Petone 22, Melrose 0. Mr. H. Card refereed.
