When tho committee took its seat, the Chairman addressed the Court. The committee, he said, considered the report of the police on the licensed premises in Wellington to be satisfactory upon the whole, but there were several matters that it considered licensees should pay attention to during the coming year with regard to the conduct of their licensed premises.^ La«t year the late chairman of the Licensing Committee drew attention to the fact that in. a. number of cases bookmakers were in the habit of frequenting certain hotels, and asked tho licensees to do what they could to preAent bookmakers using their premises in such a way as to commit a breach of the Gaming Act. Tho. committee understood that it was a difficult matter for licensees to take very effectual steps in that direction, but the committee expected that licensees would do what they could to reduce the nuisance. Thei-6 were one or two hotels where convictions had been entered against persons for being on premises on Sunday. The committeo considered that more direct supervision should be made- in regard to hotels in certain parts of the city, where persons could gain access more easily than in other parts. In one case the accommodation had been reduced beyond the limit set by the Act. The mere fact that a licensee reduced his accommodation below the requirements of the Act showed thai he did not appreciate his duties as a licensee. There was .power under the Act for the police to bring such a licensee before- a quarterly meeting of the committee and have his license forfeited. Power was also given to own-ers-to deal with such case*. (Proceeding.)
