AUCKLAND, 20th May. The condition of Evelyn Tynan, whose father is in custody on a charge of attempting to murder her, was slightly improved to-night, though she was still in a very low condition. The wounds in the child's neck did not extend to any of the vital blood vessels, and there is some hope that she will recover. TUG DUNEDIN'S SPEED TRIAL DUNEDIN, 20th May. The official speed trial of the tug Dunedin, built at Port Chalmers, was made this afternoon under the supervision of the Harbour Board's ongineer. The conditions were not too favourable, but a speed of twelve and a half knots was attained over a measured course of one mile and a half. WESTPORT COAL CO. DIVIDEND DUNEDIN, 20th May. The directors of the Westport Coal Company have declared an interim dividend of Is per share for the half-year ended 31st March. CRIMINAL SESSIONS NEW PLYMOUTH, 20th May. In the Supreme Court to-day, Arnold Victor Smith, a Russian Pole, who defended himself, was acquitted on two charges of theft of money from a dwelling. Passing of sentence on William Do Grouchy Ogier, for embezzling while Town Clerk at Inglewood, was further deferred till to-day on account of a plea for probation.
