PERSONAL MATTERS
The Hon. James Allen, Minister of Defence, is in Taranaki to-day, in company with General Sir lan Hamilton. The Hon. W. H. Herries. Minister of Eailwaysj is expected from Nelson this evening. Dr. Pomare is in Auckland, waiting for the departure of the Tutanekai for the Cook Islands. The other members of thu Cabinet are in town, Mr. R. M'Callum, M.P. for Wairau, is on a visit to Wellington. Mr.' C. L. Dtiigan, chairman of directors of the Wanganui Meat Freezing Company, expects to leave to-morrow on a visit to England. Mr. R. B. Grange, who is about to make a tour of tfie Commonwealth extending over two months, will leave Wellington by the Ulimaroa on Friday for Sydney. Professor E. EL.Pi'ince (Canadian. Commissioner of Fisheries) ami Mr, L. F. Ayson (Chief Inspector of Fisheries) returned to Wellington yesterday attarnoon by the Main Trunk express from Auckland. The Very Rev. Dean Holley, of Wanganui, is in Wellington on his way to Belgium. Before leaving Wanganui the parishioners of St. Mary's Church presented him with a purse of sovereigns as a mark of esteem. Mr. Allan J. Hill, a son of Mr. S. Hill, of Wellington, has been appointed secretary of the Stratford A. and P. Association. Mr. Hill was for some years in the Land Tax Department in Wellington, and more latterly in the Valuation Department, Auckland. Sergeant-Major Finlay, of the No. 5 Company Garrison Artillery (Petone), has been promoted lieutenant of the company, which he joined twenty-three years ago, and of which he has been a N.C.O. for seventeen years. Other promotions in the same company are Quartermaster-Sergeant Cruickshank to sergeant-major and Sergeant Knight to quartermaster-sergeant.
