OBITUARY MR. J. H. N. A. BURNES.
Mr. J. H. N. A. Burnes, manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company at Wellington, passed away suddenly at the Wellington Club yesterday evening. Shortly before 7 o'clock he was taken , ill, and immediate aid was rendered, but I )i<s died half an hour later. Dr. Cahill was called in, but could only state that life was extinct. Mr. Burnes had been suffering from heart complaint for a considerable time, and his death was not .unexpected. The late Mr. Burnes was the son of Mr. Adam Burnes, who was a native of Montrose, Scotland, who in 1857 opened the Oriental Banking Corporation in Wellington (the first bank established in the colony), and who was afterwards the first general manager and inspector of the National Bank of New ' Zealand. Mr. J. H. N. A. B times was born in Melbourne, and had been in tlm service of the Nnw Zealand Shipping Company for thirty-six years. He was fifty-three years of age. He joined the Wellington office as a youth, and was afterwards stationed for several years at Dntiedin. Tie then became chief clerk in the company's head office at Christchurch, and some sixteen years ago was promoted to the position of manager in Wellington. In hie younger days he was a prominent footballer, and played for the Athletic Club, and represented Wellington Province in the 'seventies. Some. , three years ngo he took a trip to fing- l land, but after his return he spent some mix • months in hospital, and had not ' since then enjoyed good health. Ihp late Mr. Humes is survived by a widow and a son and daughter. Miss Madge Burnes is on a visit to England, and the son, Mr. Allan Burnes, who is ' on n sheep station in the North Island. «, s ,P enrlth X {t holiday in New South Wales. His sister is Mrs. JL H. Lough-* nan, of Christehttrch. and his brothers are Messrs. Adam Burnea, Government Life Insurance Department Wellington , Alexander Burnes. Government Ltfe Insurance Department, Nelson; .Ernest L. Buwies, Melbourne, and formerly of the A.M. P. Society, Wellington; George ,Burnes, district manager of the A.M. P. Society, Inyercargill : and Douglas Biirnes, who is residing in Canada. The remains will be inteirod to-mor-row afternoon in the Taita Cemetery, alongside those of a daughter, who died a few yeare ago. General regret is expressed in shipping circles at Mr. Burnes's death, and the flags on the various office* and vessels in port wero flown at half-mast to-day urn a mark of respect.
