DUNEDIN NEWS THE CHURCH AND LABOUS. MAN MISSING. * HOME SCIENCE HOSTEL. (IT TELEGRAPH— SPKCUL TO IHB POST.) DUNEDIN, This Day. As the result of a conference between the Rev. E. S. Gray and the Rev. G. Heighway (representing the Council of Churches) the Hon. J. T. Paul and Mr. R, Slater (Labour), the Ofcago Labour Council is to be invited to hold a meeting in the Hanover-street Hall next week to discuss the relationship between the Church and Labour. The Dunedin Corporation now has a Renewal Fund of £112,749 in connection with its different trading departments, and it is proposed to approach the Legislature and ask for authority to invest this money in recognised securities. The object of this is to prevent the money being used for purposes other than for what it is intended. _ Alfred Arthur Austin, a chemise's assistant, employed at Kempthorne and Prosser's, has been reported to the police a* missing. He was last seen shortly after noon on Saturday, when he said ho was going to Waitati, but it appears that he did not go there. He has not been heard of since. Mr. Austin, who is a well-known cricket umpire, is married, and lived at Kennington. The Otago University Council resolved yesterday to write to the Minister of Education, notifying him that if he could provide the money to purchase certain properties (which once purchased could be made suitable for a Home Science Hostel for £850), the council would provide this quoted sum to make the necessary alterations. The Chancellor mentioned that they had a sum of £1200. In connection with the matter, Mr. John Studholme wrote that if any arrangements could be made for the provision of a hostel in connection with the School of Home Science he would most gladly make his fifth contribution of £300 unconditionally.
