BREACH OF AN AWARD
»» In the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., the Wellington Iron and Brass Moulders' Industrial union of Workers proceeded against Thomas Ballinger and Co., Ltd., for a penalty of £10, for a breach of the Wellington district iron and brass moulders' award. The particulars of the alleged breach were tha.t the defendants' employed one R. R. M'Kay during the monflis of November and December, 1913, at Wellington, and failed to ..pay him the award* rates of wages. Mr. D. M. Findlay appeared for the union, and Mr. T. C. A. Hislop represented the defendant company. The defence was that M'Kay was paid more than the wages of an apprentice, and was employed as an apprentice. The Magistrate said that it was a very unsatisfactory case, and he doubted much if the position created was covered by the award. A breach had been committed, but he would impose only a nominal penalty. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for ss, with 15s costs.
A lengthy letter has been received by The Post from Mr. D. Moriarty (secretary of tho Wellington Furniture Workers' Union) on the subject of the persecution of a member by other members of tho union. The letter, with the answer of the unionist concerned, will be
