PALMERSTON ITEMS RAILWAY MATTERS.

Tho General Manager of Railways has intimated that he will visit Palmerston on Thursday next to receive deputations from the Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce on several desired improvements in railway matters. The council will ask for bells in the Square at the crossings, a new railway station, abolition of shunting in the Square, and 'abolition of the nuisance caused by the persistent whistling of engines. The Chamber of Commerce will ask for an improved time-table in regard to the early train from Palmerston to Wellington, and also that the evening train from Wellington' be speeded up. Concessions in freight are to be asked for on imported coal, also on wool for scouring and flax damaged by rain in transit which has to be returned for drying. A better train service is also to be asked for from Palmerston to Napier and Wairarapa, while the shortage of trucks will also be mentioned. A large and enthusiastic meeting was held last evening for the purpose of objecting to the classification of the Palmerston North-Kai-ranga River Board. Several speakers spoke in condemnation and in favour of the abolition of the board. A strong committee was set up to bring about the desired effect. A petition was also largely signed in the i;oom ? and a shilling subscription as a fighting fund was liberally contributed to. A meeting of the Hospital Day Committee last evening reported that a sum of £330 had been collected, which carried a Government subsidy.
