James M'Keever, described as a homeless man who made a practice of sleeping on the Thorndon Esplanade, was charged with vagrancy. A sentence of a month's imprisonment was imposed. The accused was also convicted of drunkenness, and fined 10s, vitb the option of 48 horn's' imprisonment. Albert Garnaby and William Parker,, both seamen on the* Harbour Board's dredge, were remanded to appear on Wednesday on a charge of a serious offence against a female. On the application of Mr. H. F. O'Leary, who appeared for tho accused, bail was allowed each man in the sum of £25. Richard Lynch appeared on remand, charged with drunkenness. Accused was convicted, and ordered to pay £2 7s 6d medical expenses, or, in default, to undergo forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Abraham Turner, came up for sentence on a charge of having been found at night on premises in Dixo'n-street, recently partly destroyed by fire. Accused was referred to by the police as a hard-working man from the country, who had "cut out" his cheque in town, and then found himself penniless. Tho Magistrate convicted and discharged the man on the understanding that he went back to his work in the country. Charles Charwood was remanded till next Monday on a charge of the theft of 15cwt of copper and one drum of tar, of a total value of £30 6s, the property of the Westport Coal Company. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for the accused, who was allowed bail in the sum of £25., George Hastings was fined £1, with costs 7s, the option being fixed at seven days' imprisonment, on each of three charges of breaking a prohibition order. Mary Sprowell and Harry Swanson, similarly charged, were each fined a similar amount. Four charges were preferred against Thomas M'Cormack. Inspector Hendrey stated that the accused was arrested on Saturday evening, on Custom-house-quay, for indecency. He violently resisted arrest, and struck Constable Canning, giving him a black eye. The constable's uniform was also damaged to (he extent of £2 13s 6d. The accused who admitted the allegations, was fined £2, with the ojjtion of 14 days' imprisonment, for indecency, mulcted in the sum of £1, with tliu alternative of seven days' imprisonment, for assaulting tho constable, convicted and discharged on a charge of resisting arrest, and ordered to mako good the damage done to the constable's uniform. Fritz Merx was convicted of using threatening behaviour, and fined 10s. , Thomas Cartwright and Percy Hills were similarly penali&ed for having been found on licensed premises on a Sunday.
