MIRAMAR AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The Miramar Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (.Mr. F. Townsend) pi esiding. Other members present were : Councillors Dr. Edith Huntly, Under- . wood, Bell, Stone, and Smith. It was reported that there was a debit bank balance on the district fund account of £273r 19s 2d, while the power supply loan and the improvements loan accounts were in credit to the amounts of £1564 and £1418 respectively. The consulting engineer, Mr. R. L. Mestayer, reported that in connection with the Miramar power scheme, official , tests of engines, etc., were run last month, and that the engines worked perfectly, and had fully conformed to their specified standards. In fact, the fuel consumption, taken over the whole of the runs, worked out considerably less than the guarantee, indicating a very satisfactory economy in the working of the plant. Other tests complied with the specified requirements. The Works Committee reported that at its last meeting Councillor Smith had raised the question of the manner in which payments due for drainage work done on the instalment principle were being met. It had been decided to leave the matter to the Finance Committee to consider. It was also reported that Mr. F. Marshall had written asking for a six months' term for running the Karaka Bay 'bus service, offering to reduce the charge made by him at present. The request had been acceded to. Another matter considered had been that of tenders for water meters, and it had been decided that 100 meters be arranged for at present. The proposal to lease the borough tramways was, it was reported, considered on Monday at a meeting of the Works Committee. A letter had beenread from the City Council, and in reply it had been decided that further information be obtained as to the method of arriving at the profit to be earned on the line. The City Council also wrote regarding the supply of power to the tramways. With regard to this, it had been decided that an amount should be fixed as compensation for cars being delayed. 'In its proposals the City Council agreed to the borough supplying power for all cars running on the borough lines, the present charge of Is per carmile made by the city to be reduced to lOd, subject to certain conditions. The City Council, it was stipulated, was to have the right to supply its own current in the event of failuie' of the borough supply at a charge of 2d per unit meteied in the Miramar borough powerhouse. The cost of the necessary alterations enabling the borough to supply power up to the city boundary was to be borne by the boiough. The meeting decided to agree with the proposals outlined above, and to have an agreement drawn up accordingly.
