FOUND SUFFOCATED EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST.

An inquest was held by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., yesterday, into the circumstances of the death of .Carl Neilsen, whose body was found in the mud at the edge of the Thorndon reclamation works on Tuesday morning. SeniorSergeant, Mullaney conducted the proceedings on behali of the police. Evidence was given by James Jerrold Roseingrave, a warder at the Terrace Gaol, who said that he had identified the deceased as Carl Neilsen. Deceased was discharged from gaol at 10 a.m. on the luth March. He was 72 years of age. Uavid Henry Lecompte, labourer, said that he saw deceased in Molesworthstreet last Monday night. Deceased was sober, but witness did not speak to him. Robert James Pulling, a cadet at the Salvation Army Training College, deposed that the deceased had approached him on Thorndon-quay on Monday afternoon with a request for money with which to procure a meal. Witness had taken him to a refreshment room and paid for a meal for him. Witness then went to find some Salvation Army ofiicers, with a view to seeing what could be done for him, but, when they returned deceased had disappeared. Constable Thompson, who recovered the body, said that it bore no marks of violence. In witness's opinion death was due to suffocation. ' A verdict was returned that the deceased died from suffocation.
